Schumann’s Kerner Lieder sets a remarkable cycle of nature-infused poems that are among Schumann’s most personal and affecting songs, written towards the end of his 1840 outpouring of song. The doctor-poet Kerner (see Event 40) writes of his pleasure in the rain and wind of a stormy night, his ‘Wanderlust’, his longing for forests and woods, and he surely knows better than most the answer to his posed question ‘Who made you so ill?’: ‘Nature healed me, but mankind gives me no peace’. These songs, as well as music by Hugo Wolf, are performed by thrilling young baritone Martin Hässler, who has recently joined the Vienna State Opera ensemble where roles this season will include Masetto in Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

This event is a live and live-streamed event.

For live, in-person events, all our seating is unreserved. This means you are guaranteed a seat in your chosen area, but not a specific seat. In order to allow for social distancing, you will be seated as an individual or as a group, based on the number of tickets you booked for this concert. Live-streamed performances will be available to watch live in our Digital Concert Hall at the advertised performance time and will be available to watch again and on demand until the end of November.
