The Irish mezzo-soprano Paula Murrihy has been acclaimed throughout Europe and the US for her ‘iridescent’ voice and ‘vocal magic, presence and precision’, and we are thrilled to welcome her to Oxford for the first time this evening. She and pianist Sholto Kynoch present a recital that interweaves Purcell songs with works by Grieg, Robert and Clara Schumann and Britten. The programme, which they will also perform at Amsterdam’s famed Het Concertgebouw, features the radiant poetry of Friedrich Rückert, the poignant and witty words of W.H. Auden in Britten’s Cabaret Songs, Purcell songs including ‘Sweeter than Roses’, and Grieg’s most famous songs, Op 48, that conclude with the rapturous ‘Ein Traum’.
