  1. Quiet City, for trumpet, cor anglais and strings - Aaron Copland
  2. Appalachian Spring - Aaron Copland
  3. Symphony No 9 in E minor, 'From the New World' Op 95 - Antonín Dvorák

Our evening of music from the New World opens with Aaron Copland’s hauntingly atmospheric tone poem ‘Quiet City’ for trumpet, cor anglais and strings. His ballet suite ‘Appalachian Spring’ is perhaps better known, its later stages including the variations on a Shaker Theme familiar to many as the ‘Lord of the Dance’.

The ‘New World’ symphony needs no introduction. Despite being so well known it retains delightful melodic and rhythmic freshness inspired by the music Dvorak discovered on his American visit.
