  3. Symphony No 2 in D Op 36 - Ludwig van Beethoven

What better way to end the Philharmonia’s 2022/23 season in Canterbury than a summer evening with Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali at the helm for Beethoven’s second symphony. Despite the crisis the composer was coming to terms with in the summer that he wrote it (he realised he was starting to go deaf), the work is spirited and full of positive energy.

Norwegian violinst Eldbjørg Hemsing makes her first appearance with the Philharmonia in this concert. Acclaimed for her “radiant and sophisticated performances” (BBC Music Magazine) she presents Bruch’s resplendent first violin concerto, a shining example of all the violin has to offer.
