  1. Magnificat in G minor RV 610 - Antonio Vivaldi

Antonio Vivaldi is chiefly known for works such as his setting of the Gloria, and the four violin concertos Le quattro stagioni (The Four Seasons). As a virtuosic violinist, a Roman Catholic priest, and composer at the girls' orphanage, Ospedale della Pieta, there is so much more to this composer, often stuck in the shadow of these famous works. He left us with a vast array of instrumental music, operas and sacred cantatas. Amongst these are two versions of the Magnificat, RV 610 and 611. The Magnificat – or Song of Mary – remains a very evocative text for composers, not least during Christmastide. Join us on this festive occasion to explore the original and sonorous 610 version. In 1792, composer Ernst Ludwig Gerber wrote of Vivaldi that "the rosary never left his hand except when he picked up the pen to write an opera".
