Making a rare appearance in the Sheffield International Concert Season, Maxim Vengerov is joined by the Romanian National Philharmonic Orchestra (Brasov Philharmonic)

In the first of two appearances this season, the orchestra’s Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan opens the concert with a violin concerto written by Alexey Shor, Composer-in-Residence for the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Academy and the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra.

The Symphonic Prelude is receiving its world premier will be performed by ‘one of the greatest violinists in the world’ (Classic FM), Maxim Vengerov, who also takes the solo role in Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto, with its rhythmic centre and lyrical outer movements.

The concert closes with Tchaikovsky's beloved Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, a symphonic poem-like work that encapsulates the tragic love story between Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The concert also features Sibelius’s majestic Karelia Suite and Shor’s newly-commissioned work, Symphonic Prelude.
