The first half of this concert pays homage to the 150th birthday of one of our greatest composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams: his war-torn second quartet is preceded by music from an equally great Englishman, who RVW revered (Henry Purcell), followed by two composers recalling his teaching at the Royal College of Music: a young Rebecca Clarke’s passion for Palestrina gave rise to workshops on his music, which RVW directed. The second half contains arguably one of the greatest string quartets ever written by Schubert.
