Celebrate the New Year with Aspidistra on the bank holiday with some of the music that gave hope to previous generations in difficult times. There will be more on offer than the works listed here. Aspidistra specializes in the type of light classical music often referred to as palm court music or salon music. The group consists of a string quartet, piano, flute and oboe, a combination well suited to recreate the sound of the original palm court orchestras. Aspidistra's lively interpretation of the music that so delighted our (great) grandparents still has an immediate appeal today. For youngsters, it can be a first introduction to classical music while for classical music connoisseurs, the quality and inventiveness of this music often come as a total surprise.

The programme consists of a mixture of instrumental numbers and a few parlour songs, performed by Elizabeth Menezes and Camilla Cutts. Aspidistra likes to strike a balance between well-known tunes and rarely performed material, deserving to be better known. There will be a nod from London to the Viennese tradition.

This concert will also be live-streamed from here, and will be available on demand for one month following the event, all free of charge.
