  3. The Planets Op 32 - Gustav Holst

For our 50th anniversary concert we present three masterpieces from the 20th century all written within 8 years of each other, and yet of very contrasting styles. We are delighted to welcome back Martin James Bartlett to play with us again, after his previous sell out performances in the pre-covid years. Rhapsody in Blue is Gershwin's much loved masterpiece where jazz and classical music combine to produce one of the great innovative works of the 20th century. To start the concert we have Janácek's Sinfonietta, a piece depicting scenes from his home country of Czechoslovakia requiring the use of 23 brass players! And the ever popular Planets suite by Holst completes the concert, with its musical descriptions of the astrological characters of the planets.
