  1. Elijah Op 70 - Felix Mendelssohn

The critical and popular success of Mendelssohn's dramatic 1846 oratorio depicting events in the life of the Old Testament prophet, Elijah, made it the Messiah of its day, consolidating his position as one of the greatest composers of sacred music. Two thousand people attended its premiere at the Birmingham Festival, with Mendelssohn himself conducting. The Times reported: "The last note of Elijah was drowned in a long continued, unanimous volley of plaudits, vociferous and deafening... never was there a more complete triumph; never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art."

Today, the variety, beauty and energy of its many arias and choruses ensure that it remains one of the most popular choral pieces of all time, making it a very fitting choice for the Royal Free Singers to celebrate our 50th anniversary.
