On the eve of Estonian Independence Day, the Carice Singers toast the diverse spirit of Europe’s “singing nation” – including music by Ester Mägi, Galina Grigorjeva and an Arvo Pärt premiere. Located on a faultline in European history, the “singing nation” of Estonia has drawn for centuries on the indomitable spirit of its people, and an unquenchable passion for music.

Some of its composers, like Arvo Pärt, have won global reputation; others, such as the Ukraine-trained Galina Grigorjeva, are only starting to receive their due in the west. On the eve of Estonia’s Independence Day, and the eve of the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Carice Singers explore the soul of a distinctive and potent musical culture – including a rare UK performance of Grigorjeva’s haunting Vespers, and the first London performance of the brand-new O Holy Father Nicholas by Arvo Pärt, composed for the reopening of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church which was destroyed during the terrorist attacks of September 11.
