  1. St John Passion BWV 245 - Johann Sebastian Bach

St Giles’ Cathedral Choir is excited to be performing Johann Sebastian Bach’s great Passiontide work, the St John Passion. Not heard in St Giles’ for many decades, this work, which Bach wrote in 1720s Leipzig, sets the story of Christ’s Passion as told in St John’s Gospel, in a series of dramatic tableaux, with choral crowd scenes and reflective solo arias creating an increasingly intense atmosphere.

The Cathedral Choir is joined by a wonderful team of young soloists with an international reputation, led by Samuel Jenkins in the role of Evangelist, and Jerome Knox as Christus. Accompanied by the St Giles’ Ensemble the performance is directed by Michael Harris, Master of the Music of St Giles’ Cathedral.
