Violinist Madeleine Mitchell, described by The Times as 'one of the UK’s liveliest musical forces', is a favourite at SJSS.

She returns with an Easter programme that includes the sublime Kiss on Wood which Sir James MacMillan wrote for her, based on the Easter plainchant, and which appears on her In Sunlight album. Madeleine also performs Vaughan Williams’ evergreen The Lark Ascending, Schubert’s Ave Maria (as featured on her album Violin Songs), the Rachmaninoff Vocalise and Brahms’ lyrical 2nd Violin Sonata.

Ivan Hewett describes Kiss on Wood as 'having a rapt inward lyricism, a quality inherent in Mitchell’s playing… beginning with giant resonances on the piano redolent of large sacred spaces'. Madeleine is joined by the pianist Nigel Clayton with whom she has performed for many years, including on her album Violin Muse.

The programme lasts an hour. Enjoy lunch afterwards in the Crypt.
