  1. Symphony No 83 in G minor, 'La poule' ('The hen') - (Franz) Joseph Haydn
  2. Concerto for flute and orchestra ‘Son’ (UK premiere) - Arturo Márquez
  3. Sinfonietta - Francis Poulenc

The young Romanian conductor Andrei Feher takes the Scottish Chamber Orchestra on a summertime sojourn in Scotland’s northeast for our Rhythms of Summer programme.

Haydn’s Symphony No 83, the second of the composer’s ‘Paris’ symphonies, opens the concert in dramatic style. The symphony’s nickname – ‘The Hen‘ - comes from the clucking rhythms of the first movement.

Then we take a trip to Mexico for the UK premiere of Arturo Marquéz’s new Flute Concerto ‘Son’ featuring the SCO’s charismatic Principal Flute, André Cebrián. This hugely enjoyable, and infectious music is perfect for summer, with its mix of Spanish, African and indigenous Mexican dance rhythms.

Poulenc’s Sinfonietta overflows with dance beats and jazzy themes. Full of the composer’s trademark charm and wit, this 20th century classic brings our programme to a toe-tapping conclusion.
