The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra opens Legends and Heroes, this year's Summer Music in City Churches festival, with three titans of classical repertoire. The overture to Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro sets the scene for one of the most beloved piano concertos of all, the Emperor, perhaps the crowning glory of Beethoven's 'heroic' period. The opening bars of Mozart's final symphony reminded a contemporary critic of Jupiter and his thunderbolts. It is exhilarating, regarded by many as the greatest of all classical symphonies.
