Mozart's Requiem was commissioned by a masked stranger, partly written on the composer's death-bed and indeed perhaps as his own Requiem! Preceded by potent music by Purcell: his iconic Fantasy on one note, and his powerful music for the funeral of Queen Mary II in 1695.
