Join us in St Edmundsbury Cathedral for performances of Vivaldi's ever popular Four Seasons and Paul Carr's lovely Stabat Mater.

Savitri Grier, who was Suffolk Philharmonic's featured Young Artist in 2017, will perform both as soloist and director of the Suffolk Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra in the Vivaldi.

The English Arts Chorale is an ambitious, well-travelled amateur choir, which regularly performs major works entirely from memory, giving rise to performances of immense energy and focus. The Chorale commissioned Paul Carr to write this Stabat Mater last year, recently made a recording of it, and will perform it at the English Music Festival next year.

The ancient poem called the 'Stabat Mater' reflects on the grief of Mary the Mother of Jesus, but in composing music to bring the poem to life, Paul Carr imagined the grief of mothers everywhere who lose their child. The choir is accompanied by a string orchestra, with exquisite solos for oboe and cor anglais. There are six movements, each reflecting on a mother’s heartbreak from a slightly different point of view, and so radiant is Paul Carr’s music that a deep sense of consolation is created.
