  1. Trio for violin, cello and piano, in A minor Op 50 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky

To conclude our mini-series marking the 125th anniversary of Tchaikovsky's death, Music-at-Hill is pleased to present one of his major chamber works, the Piano Trio in A minor - the only piece Tchaikovsky ever wrote for this instrumental combination. Written in Rome between December 1881 and late January 1882, it is subtitled 'In memory of a great artist', referring to Nikolai Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky's close friend and mentor who had died the previous March.

This composition, and its second movement in particular, is arguably the most difficult work Tchaikovsky wrote for piano - whether solo, with orchestra, or in a chamber group. Despite its formidable length of over three-quarters of an hour, the Trio remains popular for its breathtaking lyricism and the cosmic finality of its final statement.

Free admission, retiring collection. Coffee and biscuits are served before and after the concert.
