  1. Hebrides Overture Op 26 - Felix Mendelssohn
  2. Variations on a Rococo Theme in A Op 33 - Pyotr Tchaikovsky
  3. Scheherazade Op 35 - Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov

Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture opens the concert with a scenic adventure along the mesmerising shores of Scotland. Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, for cello and orchestra follows with soloist Bartholomew LaFollette, who has been praised for his ‘technical finesse and interpretative insight’ (Gramophone). Taking cues from the classical greats of the eighteenth century, Tchaikovsky creates a wonderful homage to Mozart with lyrical melodies and thrilling displays of virtuosity.

Closing the evening is Rimsky-Korsakov’s fantastical Scheherazade, which reimagines the legend of one thousand and one Arabian nights and enchants the listener. Shimmering strings and playful woodwind conjure visions of enrapturing tales and adventures, told with pure musical escapism in this iconic work of Russian Romanticism.
