Contrasting aspects of the Polish spirit are revealed in this concert featuring internationally renowned pianist Charles Owen. Gorecki’s ‘Three Pieces in Old Style’ draws its inspiration from early music and is imbued with his stark and uncompromising musical vision. Chopin’s much-loved Piano Concerto No 2, here in a new arrangement for smaller orchestra because of social distancing, but still full length, is illuminated with drama in the opening movement, the romantic elegance of unrequited love in the slow movement, and dramatic and dazzling technique in the exciting finale.
