  1. Sonata for Piano Op 1 - Alban Berg
  2. Sonata for Piano No 31 in A flat Op 110 - Ludwig van Beethoven
  3. Largo from the Organ Trio Sonata in C major (arr. S. Feinberg) BWV 529 - Johann Sebastian Bach
  4. Sonata for piano in B flat minor - F Julius Reubke

Jonathan Powell returns to the JdP after a two year absence with a programme exploring Austro-German keyboard traditions. The youthful and intense Sonata by Berg is contrasted with the serene and lyrical late work of Beethoven. The second half juxtaposes Feinberg's masterly pianistic realisation of a introspective Bach organ work with the grandiose and flamboyantly virtuosic sonata (of 1856-7) by Julius Reubke. He was a favourite pupil of Liszt and died aged 24; his organ sonata 'On the 94th Psalm' is frequently performed, while the contemporaneous piano work is much less often heard.

St Hilda’s College encourages all audience members to continue to wear masks during the concert and maintain social distancing where possible.
