Vaughan Williams's lark leads the way, soaring effortlessly into the skies before Britten takes potshots at the waltz (and a host of other European standards) in a warm tribute to his teacher.

After Pärt's haunting elegy to Britten, it's time for Beethoven to flex his creative muscles in his very first symphony. It may owe a debt to Haydn, but there's a constant undertow of originality, an undeniable sense of greater things to come ...
