Charles Burney’s life spanned a period when the harpsichord was being replaced by the rapidly developing fortepiano. The tide was also turning against the contrapuntal music of JS Bach in favour of the galant style of his sons Johann Christian and Carl Philipp Emmanuel, both of whom Burney met. This programme explores this newly-emerging galant style, with its yearning sensitivity of expression, as well as the boundary between baroque music for violin and keyboard and what came after, and it highlights the changing nature of the violin/keyboard collaboration.
