  1. Deus in adjutorium - Chiara Margarita Cozzolani
  2. Vespro della Beata Vergine, 'Vespers' (1610) - Claudio Monteverdi

Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 has grown to rival Handel’s Messiah as the most popular choral work from the Baroque period. Its contrasts of grandeur and intimacy are captivating, and Monteverdi’s use of space – distanced echo singing and the placement of singers – evokes an arresting sense of drama and wonder. Under David Temple, Crouch End Festival Chorus delivers all the exuberance, beauty, rhythmic invention and true kaleidoscope of colours and styles that run through this collection of pieces.

Opening the concert will be a performance of Chiara Margarita Cozzolani’s rarely heard Deus in adiutorium – the very same words that begin Monteverdi’s Vespers.
